Keeping your Family Surfing Safely

Safely finding the Surf

You will in time get to know the addresses of the Internet sites which contain the information you need most frequently.  But if you don't know an address you can generally find it by using a web search engine.  For example, if your child is doing a project on Ancient Egypt and you want to find material on it, which may be of use, you can call up one of the search engines and type in 'Ancient Egypt'.  The search engine then looks effectively, at all the connected computers in the world to see which of them has material that matches your instructions.

The problem you might find is that you are overwhelmed by information. In time you will learn how to refine your search techniques to minimize this inconvenience.  An added problem to this is that in the list sites that contain information on the topic you are looking for there may also be web sites that contain inappropriate material.  Therefore, your children should not be allowed to do searches by themselves or they should be limited to search engines that are designed for children.

Child-safe search engines are listed at: http://www.safekids.com/search.htm
